Tips for Becoming a Culturally ResponsiveTutor

In a culturally responsive teaching and learning environment, a teacher is expected to know the cultural background of his or her students.  Culturally responsive learning does not only involve knowing the culture of the students.  There are many students in schools, from different cultural backgrounds, and this stands to be a reason for cultural responsive learning and teaching practices.  Cultural responsive teaching makes it easy for teachers to capture the attention of their students.  The following points will make it easier for a teacher to adopt cultural responsive teaching practices.

Make sure that you know all the students in your class. It is important to know them socially, academically, and emotionally.  Know what their families are involved in and the different traditions attached to them  You can also know what they are always interested in.  Take some time to know where they stay.  As the students celebrate their families and cultures; you will have the opportunity to understand the cultures in a deeper manner. You can know the different method that the students use to present themselves. After knowing, give them the necessary guidelines on how to present themselves effectively, without interfering with their cultures.

Do not make a judgment when teaching your students.  You should offer a platform where students feel comfortable when asking questions.  A student should have nothing against another student’s culture.  All students are not the same; hence, no student should provoke another due to such differences.  You should educate them on the importance of analyzing an issue before they can jump into a conclusion.  Often, a class will have some students who do not like to speak up; thus, you should offer encouragement to enable them to talk about what is happening around their world.
